If you want to subtly hint at the core of whatever the dagnabbit it was that you went through, without actually communicating the event's specifics, then simply let them logically deduce it: verbally rattle off every single other event that's ever happened or ever will happen in the history of the entire goddamn universe, minus yours. You'll leave a logic-hole a metre wide. They can then read between the lines. You might be there a while though.
